The March Page rank changes are implemented. Did your blog or site gain or lose Page Rank?

The table below shows changes in Page Ranks for the 170 blogs on my dofollow blogs list between March and January 2009.

3-09 Page Rank Changes Table

I’m going to highlight the changes in this post and go into more detail in a later post. The post I wrote on the 1-09 changes was more than 800 words, and that’s a bit long for one post.

3-09 Page Rank
Changes In Brief

The most noteworthy change between January and March Page Ranks is the decrease in dofollow blogs that lost Page Rank. Only a third (37%) of the dofollow blogs lost Page Rank in March compared to more than half (55%) that lost during the January Page Rank changes.

Those that gained Page Rank were about the same – eleven percent in March and ten percent in January. Still for a third to a half to lose Page Rank, while only about ten percent gained, indicates that something isn’t right. Either Google is intentionally making it more difficult to acquire a good Page Rank, or they are systematically lowering the Page Rank of dofollow blogs or maybe of blogs in general. (Because this study only includes dofollow blogs, I prefer to limit conclusions to dofolllow blogs.)

On a brighter note, the percent of dofollow blogs maintaining the same Page Rank decreased from 62 percent to 46 percent. But All but one percent of those changes represent lost Page Rank.a

3-09 Page Rank Changes
For Dofollow Blogs

  1. Linda,

I myself seem to be in the no-change group.

I’m not convinced that your radical visitor drop-off was due to page rank. In fact my Google toolbar indicates that your main page has a PR of 2.

A more likely hypothesis is that something is happening on your blog that is delaying the execution of the Google Analytics script. When that happens, visitors who leave quickly don’t get counted.

This hypothesis deserves investigation. There may be other causes to consider as well.

    All the best,
    Larry

    Hi Larry,

Thank you for this comment and for your telephone call. I’m so relieved that the problem was apparently caused by installing the new version of WordPress and messing up the Google Analytics code. I’m so glad that my traffic and Page Rank are still intact. I know you will fix it right because you are good at the technical end of this business as well as good at marketing.

Thank you for being my mentor and friend and for encouraging me when I get frustrated enough to quit.

    Warmly,

    Linda

  3. Hi Linda! I’m wondering if those blogs that lost page rank did the same thing you did. Installing the new version of WordPress may have impacted them too. Just a thought. Deb

  4. Linda says:

    Hi Debbie,

I don’t know, but I’m in the process now of comparing those that improved and lost Page Rank to those that stayed the same. I also plan to start research on nofollow blogs so I can tell if the dofollow and nofollow blogs’ Page Rank changes differ.

By the way, Larry Brauner commented and called to tell me that I didn’t loose Page Rank. I checked a specific page, and he checked my home page. I did check the home page for all the other blogs in my study. So they should all be correct.

Larry also said that I didn’t loose my traffic, but instead somehow uninstalled my Google Analytics when I updated my WordPress. So be careful if you update. It can cause all kinds of confusion.

Anyway, I’m happy that my blog is still worth continuing.

    Warmly,

    Linda

  5. My blog had no change whatsoever. I thought it was my fault but I see that most people survived this update without any changes. Let’s hope the next update brings PR upgrades to more people.

  6. Linda says:

    Hi Nieruchomosci,

I agree. Let’s hope for more upgrades next time.

I plan to start keeping more detailed records in order to look for differences by blog activities.

    Warmly,

    Linda

I got a 2 pr boost on my blog. Lets hope it stays there

  8. Linda says:

    Hi Myers,

Congratulations! An increase of two Page ranks is great. What did you do differently to bring it up?

    Warmly,

    Linda

  9. Hello Linda,

There are many things that can cause a drop in pagerank like this:

    1) Changes in the way Google calculates pagerank – if you’re going by the Google toolbar it’s a simple 1-10 scale. With all of the sites on the web constantly changing, the relative pagerank calculation will fluctuate
    2) Changes in the links that point to your site – some of those sites may have lost pagerank, stopped linking to you, or started nofollowing links that were once followed
    3) Link velocity – the rate at which your site is acquiring quality links compared to other sites

Like anything else in Internet Marketing, there are so many factors outside of your control at work. Guess that’s part of the fun! :)

  10. Linda says:

    Hi Brian,

Thank you for this information on why Page ranks change.

Yes, Google does keep us guessing on some aspects of Page rank by constantly changing their criteria, and we all should be gaining and loosing some backlinks over a three-month period.

I hadn’t heard anyone mention link velocity before. I’d welcome more information on this. Perhaps you’d like to do a guest post on it. If so, please contact me by email or phone: 479-252-0602. You’ll get a faster reply by phone.

I really do not want my site to loose page rank i spent 3 years getting it to page rank 3 and for all that to be lost now would be terrible However I have been thinking of making it do follow. I just need some more evidence that my page rank will not be affected

  12. Linda says:

    Hi nas,

The only way I now for sure to get the evidence you need is to include about 170 nofollow blogs, matched to the dofollow blogs that I already follow, Then see if the dofollow blogs get lower Page ranks than similar nofollow blogs. I’ve been wanting to do it, but it demands so much time to select the nofollow sites and collect the data on them.

If you and others will help collect the data, I’ll do the analysis and share the results with you. Any volunteers?

    Warmly,

    Linda

  13. Pretty cool post. I just stumbled upon your blog and wanted to say
that I have really liked reading your blog posts. Anyway
I’ll be subscribing to your blog and I hope you post again soon!

  14. Sandip says:

My blog also lost page rank which is made in wordpress. After going through the article will try to upgrade t the latest version of wordpress and see it helps to improve my PR

  15. Linda says:

    Hi Sandip,

I hope the upgrade helps. I know when I upgraded I discovered an automatic pingback function. I can’t wait to use it because I believe it will get me some linkbacks. And from what I can tell links are most important in Page rank.

Thanks for reading, and I hope you will come back regularly.

    Warmly,

    Linda

  16. joey says:

i think it’s really dumb for them not to follow and for what? as long as the comments aren’t spam who cares it only bring you more traffic anyways. i mean you might as will post hubs on hubpages.com or articles on http://advisingwriters.com/. It’s hurting the internet from growing but I don’t think it’ll continue this trend

  17. Linda says:

    Hi Joey,

I think you’re saying that you don’t expect “nofollow” to continue. Actually nofollow represents the vast majority of blogs. I think because many just don’t know about dofollow.

I also run into lots of misunderstandings about what “dofollow” actually does.

    Thanks for your comment.

    Warmly,

    Linda

  18. Jay says:

I’m sorry but what does D+1 on the chart mean? And all the other D’s?

  19. Linda says:

    Hi Jay,
The D in the column stands for difference between the last Page rank and the one before, and +1 means that the blog gained 1 Page rank.

    Hope this helps.

    Warmly,

    Linda
