Are Telephone Sales Really Effective?

In spite of the fact that everybody hates telephone solicitation, telephone sales are still effective for direct-to-consumer distribution businesses.

Cold calling to just anyone doesn’t work at all. But using telephone sales as a follow-up from another contact can be worthwhile.

If potential customers self select to receive additional information from you through an Internet or direct mail contact, they are likely to be receptive. A prior contact and self selection also helps to avoid legal complications from “No Call” laws.

Sales conversions are best when your potential customer provides the best time to contact them, and what you are selling relates directly to the original contact.


How Does Conversion Compare To Telephone Expenses?

Still the conversion rate is not that great for the expense of telephone sales. On average a telephone sales person will reach a decision maker only once out of every 10 calls. Still approximately 34 million Americans purchase something by telephone annually.

So even though telephone sales cost more than Internet and direct mail, it is still an effective marketing tactic used by many direct-to-consumer distribution businesses, especially when selling high ticket products and services.
