If you don’t know your target market, you can offend its members without even realizing it, just as you can do or say something that offends a new boyfriend or girlfriend because you don’t know the person well. Thus, something that you mean positively or neutrally can be perceived as an attack.

Your lack of familiarity with the other person makes that relationship very fragile. When you get to know your new boyfriend or girlfriend, you are less likely to make mistakes in communicating and relating to him or her.

This is true in all kinds of relationships including those between businesses and target markets. Market segmentation is designed to help you get to know your target market, how its members think and act, and how to best appeal to and relate with them.
