What are dofollow blogs? Can  you answer correctely, or are you confused about  dofollow blogs? Some people are definitely confused..

What’s The Confusion
About Dofollow Blogs?

The confusion about dofollow blogs concerns the core of the movement. Let me give you an example.

I recently responded to a comment from a blogger who got upset with me for emailing her a thank you for her comment.

She proposed that I should have gone to her site and left a comment. Below is my response:

“I just left a comment on your dofollow list. I agree, we dofollow bloggers should visit each other’s blogs and leave comments, especially if the blogs are in the same niche or serving the same target market.

But dofollow doesn’t mean that if you come to my blog and leave a comment, I will come to yours and leave a comment. Dofollow is a way to get linkbacks and encourage comments, rather than traffic. It’s NOT like Entrecard.

Dofollow means that the blogger overrode the nofollow commands with a dofollow plug-in so that people who leave comments will get linkbacks. According to my tool for highlighting nofollow, your comments are nofollow.”

What’s Causing The Confusion
About Dofollow Blogs?

I think her misconception about dofollow blogs is a common one, and the icon used on many sites that says “You comment, I follow” causes some of this confusion. I was confused similarly when I first saw the icon. Don’t misunderstand.  I’m not putting the icon down or the graphic designer who produced it. She contributed her skills to the dofollow movement with the best intentions.

That this commenter participates in Entrecard may also have contributed to her confusion. Entrecard is a traffic generation program. It’s build on the idea that if  you visit enough sites and “drop your card” a large percent of those people will come to your site and  “drop their cards. Entrecard also partners with SezWho to encourage comments. I participated in Entrecard for a while. I quit because I wanted readers rather than droppers. You can read about my decision by clicking Entrecard.

Who Needs To Clear The Confusion
About Dofollow Blogs?

As with any movement, the burden of explaining the dofollow movement and clearing confusion about it falls on the shoulders of movement supporters. In this case that’s every site and blog owner who provides dofollow blog lists.

We also have a responsibility to encourage proper use of dofollow comments, and to weed out those who abuse the system. Otherwise, the movement will fail.

I frequently get comments from former dofollow bloggers, who changed back to nofollow because they got so many irrelevant and spammy comments. I see this abuse as the greatest threat to the dofollow movement. The best defense against it is a comment policy noting that such comments will be deleted, and due diligence to assure that they are.

Dofollow Blogs Conclusion

I consider deciding to maintain a dofollow blog, commenting on other dofollow blogs, and building relationships with other dofollow bloggers a marketing tactic.  Like all marketing tactics, these tactics can be used correctly or incorrectly.

P.S. If you  want to know what tool I’m using to highlight nofollow comment links. I just recently tracked it down. It’s “Search Status.” If you search for the name in quotes, you’ll find several sites that offer it as a free download with instructions. So I’m not going t repeat that information here.

  1. Linda,

Many times people read my posts and reply to them by email, on Facebook, or at another site where they found my link.

I wish they would comment about my blog right on my blog. This has nothing to do with dofollow, but I’m reminded about it by your article, and so I’m mentioning it here.

Every blogger wants more comments, especially sincere ones.

    All the best,

    Larry

    Hi Larry,

I agree, but if I want to contact or make a comment that isn’t relevant to the post, I’ve found some bloggers prefer for you to do that through the contact link or email.

Because I so appreciate relevant comments and usually delete irrelevant ones, I usually don’t leave comments that don’t relate well to the post. But I also run into some bloggers who ask that you leave a comment for any type of content.

I guess it depends on the blogger. This reinforces my believe that we should build relationships with bloggers in our niche. Through such relationships, we learn what bloggers prefer and can give it to them. And, by the way, I really appreciate our relationship. It’s exactly what we as dofollow bloggers need to do.

    Warmly,

    Linda

  3. Hi Linda;
Thanks to your clear explaination quite a while ago I have a good understanding of the do follow concept. That’s what I love about your blog and the relationship we’ve developed via phone and blog interaction, I’ve learned so much! My only concern is that my comments may not really do either one of us much good as your niche is marketing and mine is safety and security. Regardless, unless you want me to stop commenting, I will certainly continue. I enjoy our little visits!

    Linda
